One of hockey’s best rivalries is set to take center stage in Halifax on Wednesday night, as Canada and the United States face off in the semifinals of the 2023 World Juniors.

Connor Bedard was Canada’s hero in the quarter-finals. The 17-year-old continued his brilliant 2023 tournament by scoring the extra-time winner in Canada’s 4-3 win over Slovakia to send his side into the semi-finals.

Bedard’s first-period goal against Slovakia broke Canadian World Junior records for most career goals and points at the tournament, and set a new Canadian record for most points in a single tournament.

The consensus first pick in the 2023 draft has been sensational in the competition. Bedard leads all skaters in goals (eight), assists (13) and points (21). He’s already entered the all-time top five in points at a single tournament, as he’s tied with former Calgary Flames draft pick Robert Reichel for fourth on the list.

The United States secured their redemption of the quarter-finals by defeating Germany. After suffering a surprise in the first round of the round of 16 of the 2022 tournament, the Americans left no doubt about this go-around, beating Germany 11-1 on Monday.

The top line of Logan Cooley, Jimmy Snuggerud and Cutter Gauthier has paced the United States attack so far. Cooley had a hat trick against the Germans and his 11 points are only ahead of Bedard at the tournament. Snuggerud is third among all skaters with 10 and Gauthier is tied for fifth with eight.

The North American rivals meet at the World Juniors for the first time since the 2021 gold medal game. The United States beat Canada 2-0 in the game for its fifth world junior championship.
