Commanders came out of Week 16 lucky that the Lions and Seahawks lost. Washington remains in control of its playoff fate despite back-to-back losses, clinging to the NFC’s No. 7 seed with two weeks remaining.
It’s unlikely the Commanders (7-7-1) would be so lucky if they lost to the Browns on Sunday. In fact, a loss and wins for the Lions and Packers would eliminate Ron Rivera’s team.

The Browns were officially eliminated with a loss to the Saints in Week 16. At this point, Cleveland is just trying to get Deshaun Watson on track heading into his first full season with the franchise. Even so, the offense should continue through Nick Chubb and the ground game.
Commanders, meanwhile, will have a new starting quarterback this week. Rivera put Carson Wentz back in the lineup in place of Taylor Heinicke, who was fired against the 49ers last week.

Whether it’s Wentz or Heinicke behind center, the passing game needs to be more effective for Washington to pick up wins and beat the Lions, Seahawks and Packers for the final NFC playoff spot.
The Browns’ passing game also needs to be more prominent. The weather is expected to be considerably warmer than it was last weekend, so Watson will be under pressure to show progress before the end of the season.
