Ten pop-up shop interiors with memorable designs


Our first lookbook of 2023 brings together 10 pop-up boutique interiors from around the world, from a pool-style store by fashion brand Jacquemus to a playful supermarket filled with felt groceries.

Pop-up stores are temporary commercial spaces created for brands to sell their products, usually set up for just a few weeks or months.

Due to their pop-up nature, these stores often feature striking interior designs to capture the attention of their audience, especially if their goal is to promote new or limited-edition products.

Showcasing a variety of material and color palettes, here are 10 pop-up shops featured on Dezeen.

Le Bleu, UK, by Random Studio and Simon Jacquemus

Experience design firm Random Studio created a series of pop-up installations in London’s Selfridges department store which served as temporary boutiques for French fashion brand Jacquemus between May and June last year.

Titled Le Bleu, the surreal installations featured a pale blue tiled space that was lit by pool changing rooms, with dark blue lockers and cabins containing a series of smaller installations.

A better place to think, Norway, by Snøhetta

A Better Place to Think was a pop-up store in Oslo designed by architecture studio Snøhetta for tablet brand reMarkable, which turned to the tranquility of libraries for its interior design.

Warm-hued reading lamps placed on divided wooden desks illuminated curved leather banquettes where visitors were invited to sit and read. A wavy neon ceiling light was inspired by the form and energy of handwriting.

Lucy Sparrow's LA supermarket is stocked with 31,000 felt groceries

The Sparrow Mart, USA, by Lucy Sparrow

Sushi rolls, pork chops and a playful cash machine made entirely of felt were featured in a makeshift supermarket installation in downtown Los Angeles by British artist Lucy Sparrow.

The Sparrow Mart was stocked with 31,000 plush, purchasable renditions of staple foods, which were arranged along the aisles in colorful rows that drew inspiration from 1980s American supermarkets.

“As a child, I was obsessed with the exotic, turbocharged technicolor glow emanating from across the Atlantic,” the artist told Dezeen.

Pop-up store SKKN, USA, by Perron-Roettinger

Design studio Perron-Roettinger embraced a minimalist color and material palette when creating the first pop-up store for SKKN, Kim Kardashian’s skincare and homeware brand.

Located in a Los Angeles mall until late last year, the store’s curved alcoves and sculptural countertops were clad in raw plaster and cement, which served as shelves for the star’s sleek products. reality show.

Kardashian opened another pop-up store in 2021 to promote her underwear brand SKIMS, with shiny displays designed by Willo Perron.

Random Studio creates

Mugler Bodyscape, UK, by Random Studio

Random Studio recently dressed the interior of Corner Shop, Selfridges’ ever-evolving retail space, with chrome-effect fragments designed to mimic female body parts. The pieces formed an installation celebrating 30 years of fragrances by the fashion label Mugler.

Called Bodyscape, the striking large-scale fragments were crafted from painted wood, while a sculptural drop-shaped centerpiece dispensed Mugler scent intermittently and also produced rippling light as visitors approached.

“Viewed from the street, the sculptural installation forms an abstract side view of an elegantly reclining woman,” Random Studio said.

OMA designs the ephemeral Tiffany store in Paris

Pop-up store Tiffany & Co, France, by OMA

Pieces from the 185-year history of jeweler Tiffany & Co are currently on display in a pop-up store in Paris designed by architecture studio OMA, which will run throughout this year until it is dismantled in May.

The maze-like store features a dramatic blue rotunda featuring designs from Tiffany’s extensive archive, which are encased in pyramidal glass plinths mirrored by gigantic images of the jewelry – inflated to give visitors a deeper look at the pieces’ delicate features.

Pop-up store Self-Portrait, USA, by Storey Studio

Luxury fashion brand Self-Portrait showcased its Fall/Winter 2019 ready-to-wear collection at a New York City pop-up store in SoHo designed by Storey Studio.

An immersive setting was created by hanging translucent pink and white lace curtains that the studio attached to a concentric circular wooden structure, while suspended tubes of LED lighting illuminated the interior.

“Upside-down” Axel Arigato pop-up store, UK, by Have

Axel Arigato shoes are currently on sale at this ‘upside-down’ pop-up store in Selfridges, designed for the streetwear label by French studio avoir to recall an inverted desk.

The magnet-equipped trainers stick to the walls of the space, which features familiar polystyrene grid ceilings and other office-like materials like strip lights and exposed wires.

“The concept was to flip the script both physically and figuratively on what customers want from a pop-up, flipping all the elements through an industrial office lens in which the ceiling becomes the floor and vice versa,” said Axel Arigato.

Glossier pop-up store in Seattle

Glossier pop-up store, USA, by Studio Lily Kwong

Landscape designer Lily Kwong leaned into the topography of Seattle’s Capitol Hill to create a local pop-up store for beauty brand Glossier.

Designed in collaboration with Glossier, the store contained moss-covered mounds referencing rolling hills and covered in plants native to the region.

Pink and purple accents featured throughout the space and nodded to the brand’s brightly colored makeup collection, which was displayed on white plinths.

Fatface Cafe by Baicai

Fatface Cafe, China, by Baicai

Fatface Coffee was a pop-up cafe designed by architecture studio Baicai and presented for a month at the Window Gallery in Shenyang, China.

The focal point was 300 forest-green beer crates forming a central rectilinear bar and cork stools – an installation that aimed to blend the city’s penchant for beer with an emerging local coffee culture.

Bacicai opted for this central seating area to create an open space that promotes free movement and challenged the conventional cafe floor plan.
